Concerts 2012 |
|
| Winchester Cathedral - 12th May 2012 7.30pm by kind permission of the Dean and Chapter Conductor: Derek Beck Our 2012 'French Connection' features three colourful examples of sacred repertoire from the mid-19th century and the late 20th. All three composers had successful careers writing for the opera house and their settings of traditional Latin texts for the church are no less vivid. Powerful choruses and soaring solo lines are supported by rich orchestrations. Bizet had composition lessons from Gounod whilst Poulenc, a devout Catholic, owes more to Stravinsky and jazz in his syncopated version of Gloria in excelsis Deo. Tickets: £25 reserved, & £20 unreserved (half price for those in full time education) available from Winchester Cathedral Box Office: 01962 857275, email boxoffice@winchester-cathedral.org.uk or visit www.winchester-cathedral.org.uk |

Romsey Abbey - 19th May 2012 7.30pm by kind permission of the Vicar and in association with Music in Romsey Conductor: David Burgess Dvorak completed his Op.86 Mass for chorus, semi-chorus and organ in 1887 but six years later orchestrated this Romantic setting of the familiar rite. Karl Jenkins, famous for his Armed Man Mass, premiered his Stabat Mater in Liverpool in 2008. Alongside the accepted Latin prayer he places other poetry, some presented in languages as diverse as Greek, Aramaic and Hebrew. In so doing Jenkins adopts ethnic composition styles and even appropriate non-Western instruments - all in a powerful and engaging manner which has made him such a popular composer. Tickets: £20, £16 & £12 unreserved (half price for those in full time education) available from Romsey Tourist Information Office, 13 Church Street, Romsey. Telephone: 01794 512987 |
